History of the Press-fit technology

This technology has been used for more than 20 years
- Early Press-Fit Technology was achieved by interference dimensions
- Today replaced by flexible zone technology
- Press-Fit Technology was widely used by Telecom industries
- Today widely used in nearly all industries and their interconnect applications

Why do we use Compliant/Press-Fit Technology?

Benefits:

Replaces the need to solder: Cost savings; Lead free from June 2006; etc.
    - Process Reliability: Insertion force monitoring; High repeatability by automation
    - Product Reliability: No thermal stress; Reliable connection; According to IEC 60352-5; Limited separable interconnect
    - Market Requirements: Telecom; Automotive; Industrial Electronics, etc.

    Definition of Compliant/Press-Fit Technology:

The insertion of a contact into a metalised PCB through hole. Between the contact and the metalised/plated PCB through hole, e.g. Traces/Laminates, there will be a gas tight conductive connection.

      - Compliant/Press-Fit Technology can be used either for male or female contacts.

Autosplice offers two types of solderless components:

      The Compliant Pin:

The basic material of the compliant pin is a 0,64 mm sized square wire.
Pins will be produced according to customer requirements at length of
6 - 40 mm. Packaged and delivered end-to-end on our standard continuous reels and inserted with our universal insertion head.

      The Compliant Tab:

The compliant tab is stamped from a continuous strip of material with
0,64 mm or 0,8 mm thickness. It will be produced and designed according to customer requirements. This process offers a wide range of scopes for design:
      • free choice of geometry
      • shapes for raising the retention force of the components inside plastic houses, e.g. saw teeth
      • double compliant, press fit zones on both ends, e.g. as a PCB connector
      • using customized materials
      • insertion of the components in headers
The straight formed compliant tabs will be inserted with our standard tab insertion heads and the bent compliant tabs will be inserted with specialized insertion heads.

      PCB requirements:

      • PCB material: Typically FR4 (or comparable/better)
      • metalised/plated through hole
      • PCB thickness: 1.6 - 3.2 mm (typical)
      • Important note: It's not recommended to solder a Compliant/Press-fit interconnection

      Component design:

      • Insertion force: max. 250N (70-100N typical)
      • Retention force: min. 20N (40-70N typical)
      • Press fit length: Length of effective contact area between contact and through hole
      • efficient and cost saving manufacturing

      Quality Assurance and Testing:

Quality Assurance and Testing according to IEC 60352-5

      • Retention force (min. 20N)
      • Insertion force (max. 250N)
      • Contact resistance
      • Bending strength trial

      Hole dimension:

On the strength of our past experience the point of particular importance for a solid press fit connection will be the drill hole and the hole diameter of the plated through hole.
